The Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) is being widely implemented and used by many highway agencies across the nation. As of 2007 (FHWA 2007), 80% of states have an MEPDG implementation plan and many of them consider the MEPDG. AASHTO MEPDG-3 Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide: A Manual of Practice. Abstract

The Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) was developed under National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Project 1-37A as a novel mechanistic-empirical procedure for the analysis and design of pavements. The MEPDG, published in 2008, was subsequently supported by AASHTO’s DARWin-ME pavement design software (starting in April 2011) and AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design was the next generation of pavement design software (as of February 2013).

About This Item

Full Description

The AASHTO Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide, Interim Edition: A Manual of Practice provides the highway community with a state-of-the-practice analysis tool for evaluating pavement structures using mechanistic-empirical principles, using project specific traffic, climate, and materials data for estimating damage accumulation over a specified pavement service life. This manual is applicable to designs for new, reconstructed, and rehabilitated flexible, rigid, and semi-rigid pavements. Performance and distress predictions models are used to aid the pavement designer in determining the desired pavement section.
Currently, there is no commercially available software program associated with the MEPDG manual, however, AASHTO has issued a project solicitation to its member states for the development of commercial grade software for the design and analysis of new and rehabilitated pavements using mechanistic-empirical methods. If the required number of states fund the proposed project, software development is expected to be completed by mid-2011. If you have additional questions about this software program, please contact Vicki Schofield at vschofield@aashto.org.
